The Capri 14.2 Nationals were held at Mission Bay in San Diego on the 20th and 21st of September. The members of the Mission Bay Yacht Club were terrific hosts. I encourage our members to visit them if in the San Diego area. It is a great club. There were four races on Saturday and three on Sunday. Several of the courses took an hour to finish. At the completion of Saturday’s racing, Skipper Bob Amenta and Crew Mark Miller were tied for 1st place with a team from Arizona. Sunday had a grueling three races each took an hour to complete without a break. When the results were tallied, our Club team won first place in the Silver division. All the sailors were gracious and happy that WYC Port #1 was back in business.

The Louise Kapus regatta was held on Sunday October 12th. All classes were invited to participate. Louise was a strong supporter of our sailing program. She was present at all of our regattas, sitting in her wheelchair registering the sailors and their boats. Many of us gray beards remember her with fondness. I will have the results of this regatta, the Trick or Treat regatta and the Skipper of the Year regatta in the December issue of Telltales.

The Skipper of the Year regatta has been postponed to November 23rd. The Sailing Committee decided to wait until the results of the Kapus & Trick or Treat regattas.

The Committee also notified the Junior sailors regarding the usage of Club boats. Junior sailors may use the Club boats on our lake on occasions where a chase boat is present and operated by a Club member. No junior member may take a Club boat to away regattas unless their parents are regular, single or family members of the Club. Only club members may pull our trailers and they are responsible for returning and storing the boats and trailers.

See you on the water

Capri 14.2 Nationals

Perfect San Diego Weather Greets Capri 14.2 Sailors
By Mark Miller

On September 20-21, the placid waters of San Diego's Mission Bay lived up to its storied reputation as one of the California's premier small boat racing venues. Here, once again Mission Bay Yacht Club (MBYC) hosted the Capri 14.2 National Championship. And once again the weather cooperated with blue skies, mid-70's temperature, and 8-12 knots of steady breezes.

Boats from MBYC, Arizona YC, California YC, and Westlake Village YC were divided into two classes, Gold, for veteran racers, and Silver, for the less-experienced. Trophies for Gold Fleet went 5 deep, and those for Silver went 3 deep.
MBYC carried home the first three places in the Gold Fleet, with the first place Trophy (and the National Championship) going to skipper Scott Finkboner and Crew Jennifer Lyons of MBYC.

Silver Fleet winners were skipper Bob Amenta and crew Mark Miller from Westlake Village.

Racing was marred by only one mishap, a capsizing and subsequent turtling. This Capri 14.2 sailor watched with interest as the sailboat crew managed on their own to pull the boat up (by pulling on the centerboard) until it lay on its side. At that point one of the chase boats moved in. It approached the masthead, where a crewman knelt on the chase boat bow and lifted the masthead out of the water. Then the chase boat moved slowed toward the hull of the Capri 14.2 as the crewman lifted the mast. By the time the chase boat had gone about ten feet the Capri popped upright. Then the chase boat pulled the sailors out of the water and transferred them to the Capri. The whole procedure took only a few minutes and demonstrated the advantage of having a veteran chase boat crew.

2 - Scott Hoffmann and Tyler Caroe MBYC

Sail-A-Thon 2008

The annual Sail-A-Thon was held on Saturday, August 2nd at the WYC. Sixteen boats participated by sailing laps starting at 1pm and finishing at 5 pm. About seventy-five parents and club members watched from the deck as the sailors rounded Mark 2 and Mark 8. The winner of the Laser class was Jackie Hollander and the Sabot winner was Riley Magadow.

Lunch for the sailors and guests was served by Boccaccio's on the Landing. Many club members were in attendance to cheer the junior sailors.

This annual event is our club's only fund raiser and this year's donations reached the $10,000 goal set by the WYC board. The money will be allocated for Junior needs.

Our next regatta is the Vrooman Mem. on August 17. Sailors representing 25 yacht clubs will visit our club to compete for the Sabot High Point Series. Last year we hosted 45 boats.

A Notice of Race (NOR) will be posted soon with the details.
