Labor Day Regatta

Labor Day Regatta in the C14s:

We lucked out (for a while) on Sunday. We needed it!
We got a late entry from Ray & Pam (first timers) to give us a 3 boat class.

Thanks guys. Hope to see again soon.

Our other competition was Franklin , very experienced, with Teagen, another first-timer, for crew.

We got good starts in the first two races and were able to hang on to win.
This led to the thought that we don’t need no stinken luck.
Race three Franklin and Teagen showed us otherwise.
We got another good start and Franklin & Ray were late. Race over?

Not even close! By the time we got to the South shore and tacked to port, Franklin was on the start line in a right shift and sailing straight up the lake!

We were on the severe header & by the time I figured this out and tacked back, Franklin rolled us and shut off our wind. What to do?

Confused and cursing we tacked a couple of more times and started looking for some luck!

Wow! We got some, got in front and made a great rounding at the weather mark. (a weather mark.)

Then Suz sez ”this is 4 we are going to 6!”. Franklin & Teagan sail by.

More cursing and praying for luck! Again we got pretty close by the time we got to 6 and then:

Another WOW! Maybe it was a new crew trying to get the pole ready or ?? Anyway, Franklin zigs when it’s time to zag and we get in front again!

F&T got it together and sailed great downwind. Well if not great, certainly as well as we did.

They stayed on our transom the whole way. But all we needed was, to stay between the competition and the next mark.

Not so easy with brain shut off. We decided to go left of the S/F line. They split to the right. But we weren’t dead yet. This had paid off for us in races 1&2.

However, rounding the S/F pin (brain still on off) I gybed the boat hard with the board still up, rounded up & nearly blew over. Game over!

Nice sailing Franklin & Teagan, You too, Ray and Pam.
