Sabot High Point Series

Thirteen boats participated in the High Point Series. Three classes were represented from Ventura to King Harbor Yacht clubs. Brian Rackohn was race captain, Bob Amenta was timer and Maurice worked the flags. Ann Nelson commandeered the registration desk while Mitty & Melisa served in the kitchen. The wind was steady at 8-10 MPH with constant shifts. Courses 81,82. & 83 were used for the first time with the Sabots followed by courses 2 & 3. Roberto Stevens won first in the A class. Roberto learned to sail here at the WYC and then joined the Del Rey club where Sabot racing is very competitive. Roberto won the championship last year and is on his way to win again this year. This race was the third in a series of ten races to determine the Sabot champion. The Vrooman High Point series will take place in August. The sabots will return again to try their skills racing on the lake.

Toon Town Sails On & Hula Girl Left Friday

Beverly Burr is on the Santa Cruz 50 "Hula Girl" in the Newport to Cabo Race. They're in class "C" and started yesterday. The "A" and "B" class boats start today.

You can follow her at iboat track by selecting Hula Girl under "add by boat" and I think it automatically refreshes. The race also has a facebook page which the NHYC Race Committee updates frequently.

Mike Eisenberg and Charlie Heatherly sailed on "Toon Town" in the Big Daddy Regatta at Richmond Yacht Club last weekend. They were 2nd in Saturday's Ultimate 20 Class buoy racing and fourth of the 100 -- yes, one hundred -- boats entered in Sunday's pursuit race around Alcatraz and Angel Islands. Here are some comments and descriptions from the U20 Forum.

Big Daddy Regatta
March 12-13, 2011
Saturday
Layla and Toon Town played it tough in the first two Saturday races, with Toon winning the first one by a boat length. In the second race both of the lead boats experienced problems with their spinnaker sets, and Layla was able to sail just a bit deeper downwind, to win by three boat lengths. The third race turned into a Layla horizon job, as an Open 5.7 had caught its keel on the weather mark, causing Toon to miss the offset, requiring Michael to douse his kite and re-round. By this time the breeze was nuking up to about 20 knots, providing exhilarating downwind sailing. Saturday’s conditions were glorious, with clear skies and great racing.

Sunday
The weather was gray and drizzly for the pursuit race around Angel and Alcatraz islands. Which direction to choose? The four U20s split, with Breakaway and Toon Town heading for Alcatraz first (the clockwise direction) and Layla and Uagain heading counter-clockwise into Raccoon Straits. We rode the dying ebb through the straits, then short-tacked along the west side of Angel Island to Point Blunt before heading across to Alcatraz. This worked well, as little Layla was the first boat in our direction around the Rock. Looking back at the many boats all well behind us was fantastic.

As we set the kite we got rolled by a Sydney 38, but when we exited the lee of Alcatraz the nuke-o-meter turned on, and Layla jumped onto a rip-snorting full-bore plane. See ‘ya later Sydney 38, as we blew their doors off, opening up a huge margin on the entire counter-clockwise fleet. We later watched the hyper-speed D Class catamaran Adrenalin blast by, followed by the 40’ Pro Sail cat Shadow, both doing about Warp Factor Nine. Halfway back to Richmond the rain descended and, as often happens in this location, the wind fizzled. We could see the lead clockwise boats heading out of Raccoon Straits, and we watched in frustration as about twenty got by us. The Sydney 38 eventually drifted over us, making Layla the second counter-clockwise monohull to the finish.

Thank you Franklin Cofod for supplying the update on our sailors.

Big Daddy Regatta, Richmond

Mike Eisenberg & Charlie Heatherly competed in the "Big Daddy" series at the Richmond YC last weekend in the San Fransco Bay. Mike and Charlie are both corinthian sailors representing the WYC. The regatta hosted 99 boats from thoughout California. All classes were invited to compete. After a hard day of sailing their boat "toon town" was fourth out of 99. Congratulations to Mike and Charlie on a great day of sailing and how proud we are that our burgee was sailing in such competition and doing very well.

Big Daddy & Cabo

Mike Eisenberg & Charlie Heatherly are sailing this weekend at the Richmond Yacht Club in their "Big Daddy" regatta. Mike and his crew have been very successful sailing in his Ultimate '20. He came in first last week in Richmond. Mike and Charlie are both Corinthian sailors from WYC. Our burgee will be well represented by these fine sailors.

Bev. Burr is sailing in the Newport to Cabo regatta. Bev is a relatively new sailor and member of our club. She will crew with an experienced team from Marina Del Rey. Susan and Paul Artoff have sailed this race several times and this year I believe they will be on the race committee boat.

C-14.2 Fleet Annual Minutes

Westlake Yacht Club C-14.2 Fleet
32123 W. Lindero Canyon Road
Westlake Village, CA 91361
818-889-4820

Minutes: February 24, 2011
Present: Staff Commodore Robert Amenta, Ross Ellena, Susan Kelsey, Staff Commodore Franklin Cofod, Stuart Kovalivker, Beverly Burr, Charlie Heatherly, Mark Niles, Chris Patterson, Mike Eisenberg, and Rear Commodore Sal Scarpato.

The minutes to approve the meeting of February 12, 2010 were approved unanimously without changes.

Treasurer Stuart Kovalivker submitted the financial report and it was accepted.

New Business:
• It was reaffirmed that Staff Commodore Bob Amenta is the new fleet captain.
• Beverly Burr agreed to assume the position of treasurer for the coming year.
• Amenta and Burr will be the new signatories on the fleet’s bank account.
• A motion was made to revise the dues and charge everyone $50 per year to belong to the fleet. WYC members who are not paying fleet dues will pay $20.00 per regatta for use of a boat; once they have paid a total of $50, they will be a member of the fleet. The motion passed unanimously.
• A motion was made by Ross Ellena to change the Charter to read “all adult members” of the club instead of “all Regular Members” and it was seconded by Staff Commodore Franklin Cofod.
• Ross Ellena presented his report on the condition of the boats in the Capri 14.2 fleet. He stated that they were ship shape and ready for the sailing season. A discussion followed regarding the future replacement of sails. It was agreed that all sails should be purchased at the same time so that they would be equal.
• Beverly Burr suggested that we hold seminars for new and current members of the fleet. All agreed that this was a good idea. Captain Bob Amenta said he would set a date for seminars.
• All members present, agreed to help promote sailing in the C14.2 among members of the club and to advertise to other clubs. The Westlake Cup was suggested as a two day opportunity to have visitors come and sail on our lake.
• It was suggested that we set aside the Mod 3 boat for practice. The boat would be moored at the dock so that anyone could come and quickly rig it and sail off. Ross said he would look into the feasibility of this proposal.
• The meeting was adjourned.

Following the meeting we had a panel discuss the peculiarities of sailing on the lake. They responded to the question, “What is the most important thing to know about sailing on Westlake Lake?” Several good techniques and ideas were discussed.

Respectfully submitted

Captain Bob Amenta

Gnarly Day at Olympic Gold Regatta

Gnarly day at the Lake. Winds were gusting 10-20 MPH with an occassional 25MPH. We lost one C-14.2 because of a malfunction causing it to return to the docks. Later one boat flipped and the sailors had to be rescued. A C-18 was lodged among boats and docks at the island. It was a great challenging experience.

Results

First place - Bob Amenta & Charlie Heatherly
Second Place - Franklin Cofod & Bruce Gillies
Third Place - Ross Ellena & Susan Kelsey

C-18
First place - Sal Scarpato & Stuart Kovalivker

Mid-Winter Regatta

We had a good turn-out for the first race of the year. The weather was threatening in the morning however the sun came out and it was great. Unfortunately the wind was very shifty. Gust were the norm and at times we were sailing with a reverse wind.
Rob Schaefer and his crew took first place in the C-18 class. Congratulations!
Mike Eisenberg & Bev. Burr were first in the C-14 class. They tied with Bob & Charlie however they won the last race so they received the trophy. The awards were provided by U.S. Sailing Association. Jake Stephens won the Sabot class.

We are expecting more boats for the Olympic Gold on March 7 at the club.
